Congratulations to this week’s Athletes of the Week! Keep up the good work!
Girls Thirds Squash: Trisha Boonpongmanee ‘20
Trisha has played at the number one spot for Deerfield Thirds girls squash all season. She has won all of her matches thus far. Trisha’s hard work during practice and focus on the court during matches have paid off, helping our team to an undefeated run to this point in the season.
Boys Varsity Squash: Merritt Wurts ‘21 & Max Geraci ‘19
Merritt Wurts- he went 3-1 at the nationals, defeating players from Hotchkiss, Gilman, and Chestnut Hill. Also Max Geraci who went 3-1, defeating players from Episcopal, Gilman, and Hotchkiss.
Girls Varsity Swimming & Diving: Izzy Hamlen ‘20
Izzy Hamlen is the Girls Varsity Swimming & Diving AOTW this week. She was chosen because she completes every lap of her workouts without complaint. She’s quick with a smile and encouragement. Her teammates recognize that she is putting in a great effort every day. She has also had some great races in our recent meets!
Boys Varsity Swimming & Diving: Marco Marsans ‘18
For earning a multitude of personal best times over the past two weeks and triumphing over the rigorous practices of the Long Winter Weekend training trip, Marco Marsans is the Athlete of the Week for Boys Varsity Swimming & Diving. In the dual meets before the break, Marco dropped time in his 100 Back, 200 and 500 Free and also won his first individual event in the 100 Breast against NMH. Building on this success, Marco came into the training trip and impressed the coaches by swimming on faster intervals and maintaining consistent pace throughout the nine workouts. By Monday, he improved his 200 Free time again, dropping a total 21 seconds from the start of the season! We commend Marco for these remarkable efforts in his final swim season here at Deerfield and we thank him for the example he sets in the pool.
Boys Varsity Hockey: Theo Lenz ‘18
The BV Hockey team would like to nominate Theo Lenz. Theo put the team first and willingly switched positions last week, playing a solid game up front and generating numerous offensive chances. He has been a great captain from start to finish. I think he is poised for a great final third of the season.
Girls Varsity Basketball: Claire Cummings ‘21
The Girls’ Varsity Basketball Athlete of the Week is first year, Claire Cummings. Claire is the only first year on our team and has been an integral part of our success. Due to some injuries on our team, she has had to step up her game, and she has surely risen to the challenge. In our most recent contest against KUA, Claire posted a game-high 20 points and 8 rebounds, even while being defended by KUA’s strong forward, who will be playing at Boston College next year. We look forward to more great play from Claire this season!
Boys Thirds Basketball: Lorenzo Biondo ‘21 & Grey Holmén ‘21
The boys thirds basketball team have chosen Lorenzo Biondo and Grey Holmén as their athletes of the week. Grey has been one of the most improved players over the past 6 weeks of play. He has displayed increasing poise and aggressiveness in recent weeks and is becoming a very reliable player on both sides of the ball. Lorenzo has been a dynamic player from the very start, but recently has been on a tear, attacking the basket fearlessly and wreaking havoc defensively. He led us in scoring in our last game against Avon and scored the layup that pushed us into overtime in that game. Kudos to both for their efforts!
Girls V Squash: Ashley Manning ‘19 & Harbour Woodward ‘19
Co-Captains Ashley Manning and Harbour Woodward stood out as terrific leaders and role models during the High School Team National Championships this past weekend in Philadelphia. Despite struggling with illness, Ashley and Harbour exemplified grace and dignity during difficult matches and devoted themselves to inspiring their teammates to play with great Deerfield team spirit all weekend long.
Girls Varsity Hockey: Haley Sundstrom ‘21
GVH Athlete of the Week is Haley Sundstrom. Down to only five defensemen in our 1-0 win against Winchendon, Haley stepped up and played three periods of consistent and smart hockey. She made good decisions with the puck, stepped up confidently into the play, and was solid as a rock in the defensive zone. Haley has worked hard all year, and maintained a wonderful attitude throughout.
Girls JV Basketball: Juliette Lowe ‘21
Juliette Lowe (’21) is this week’s athlete of the week. She plays her heart out every time she steps on the court. She had a solid performance last week against Cushing Academy, scoring 6 points and contributing strong rebounding and defensive play. Since the beginning of the season, she has grown significantly as a player. Looking forward to watching her play for the remainder of the season. Keep up the good work Juliette!
