Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to our first winter 2017-2018 Athletes of the Week! Great work!

Girls Varsity Hockey: Elizabeth Hernberg ‘18

GVH Athlete of the Week is Elizabeth Hernberg. New to Deerfield, Elizabeth has made an immediate impact with her work ethic, positive attitude, and intelligence on the ice. She has been our most consistent forward thus far this season, and always gives 100% whatever the situation. We value her leadership and “team first” attitude, as well as the spark she provides on every shift.

Boys Thirds Squash: David Chen ‘20

David was the last match on in our season opener at Eaglebrook. Although we had already clinched the match, he still gave a tremendous effort, battling through exhaustion and dehydration to come from behind and force a fifth game. Although David came up just short in the end, his inspired play brought us together and set an example for our young team. We hope he will find his way into the win column in our next match.

Girls JV Basketball: Ruby Chase ‘21

Ruby Chase (’21) is our first athlete of the week. Only two weeks into the season, and Ruby has shown her coaches, teammates, and opponents just how tenacious and competitive she can be! From her first day of tryouts, she has stood out as a hard worker with the drive to improve every time she steps on the court. In tough matchups against NMH and Frontier, she led our offense with confidence and set the pace on defense. She’s a fierce competitor, and we look forward to seeing how she evolves as a player over the course of the season. Keep up the good work Ruby!

Boys JV Hockey: Alexander Leong ‘20

For our first athlete of the week nomination of the 2017-2018 season we would like to recognize Alexander Leong. Alex has worked incredibly hard on becoming a better goaltender since the end of last season, and already we are seeing advances in his ability to consistently stop the puck. Even more important than his improved performance has to be Alex’s dedication to his team and setting a great example for others to follow. The entire J.V. team should be commended thus far in the season for embracing the early morning practices with Alex being one of the players leading the way. He brings a positive “can do” attitude to practice and games every day and his hard work is certainly paying off!

Girls Varsity Swimming & Diving: Nafi Sall ‘20

Since day one of this season, she has been challenging herself in faster interval groups.  She hasn’t missed a lap! She also won the 100 Breastroke event in our first meet against Milton.  Go Nafi!

Boy’s JV Squash: Jackson Rother ‘20

The JV squash team is off to a fantastic 2-0 start!  Last season, the squad lost 0-7 to both Hotchkiss and Groton to start the winter term but this season an influx of young players has turned things around!  The boys beat Hotchkiss 4-3 and Groton 5-2 due to strong play across the ladder but this week’s star is new sophomore Jackson Rother.  Jackson started the season with a tough loss against Hotchkiss in five games but focused intensely during practice on improving his strategy out on the court.  Jackson’s game jumped to another level and he not only moved up the DA ladder but also demolished his opponent at Groton last Wednesday.  A great start for Jackson’s squash career at Deerfield!

Girls Varsity Basketball: Emma Reavis ‘19

The Girls’ Varsity Basketball Athlete of the Week is junior guard, Emma Reavis. In a tough matchup against a strong Worcester team this past Sunday, Emma did not back down. She led Deerfield offensively and defensively, finishing with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while also chipping in 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Emma’s efforts kept Deerfield within 3 points of Worcester during the second half of the game. We look forward to more strong and inspired play from Emma this season!

Boys Varsity Hockey: Lily Davy ’18 & Sabrina Sotirhos ‘18

The boys varsity hockey team would like to nominate their two managers, Lily Davy and Sabrina Sotirhos for AOTW honors. Both Lily and Sabrina have handled the complicated logistics of this season with grace and perseverance, not once complaining about the trek over to EBS or the trips to away games. They have been enthusiastic and positive and deserve to be recognized for doing a thankless job to the best of their abilities. We are lucky to have them as managers this year.

Boys Varsity Basketball: Nick Osarenren ‘18

Athlete of the week for boys basketball is Nick Osarenren. He had 27 points to help secure our first win of the season against Westminster. He is averaging 16 pts and 9.6 rebounds a game so far this year.

Boys JV Basketball: Jacob Meier ‘20

Jacob Meier scored 14 points in our first game against Loomis-Chaffee . He also added 21 points  and 20 rebounds in our second game against Suffield. Jake is off to a strong start and showing leadership through action. Jake is very coachable and we look forward to his offensive prowess and defensive intensity to inspire our team this season.

Boys Thirds Basketball: Rian Bogle ‘19

Rian Bogle ‘19, gets AOTW honors this week from the boys thirds basketball team for his efforts and leadership during our first week of the season. He has brought enthusiasm and drive to practice each day and his energy is contagious. Rian played well in our first and only game so far this season, leading us in scoring, playing solid defense, rebounding and guiding the offense.

Boys Varsity Squash: Joni Otto Bernstein

Joni is the first boys varsity squash Athlete of the Week. This week Joni was down 2-1 to his opponent and rallied back to win in five. Great work, Joni!
