Deerfield JV Boys Basketball tipped off their home opener with an electric 52-46 victory over a talented Northfield Mount Hermon squad, fueled by sharp ball movement, strong rebounding, and standout performances across the roster.
The game started with a beautifully executed give-and-go from Mac Hynds ’26 to Teddy Hamadeh ’26 back to Hynds for a smooth layup. Hynds followed up with a breakaway assist to Will Machnik ’26 to double the lead. Early ball movement continued to pay off as Hamadeh dished to Marty Rodriguez Pastor ’28 for a three-pointer to make it 13-9. Machnik sank a high-arcing three to extend the lead to 16-12.
Mike Hioe ’27 and Jay Rich ’27 brought energy and grit off the bench, with Hioe anchoring the defense and grabbing key rebounds. Rich made a highlight play, diving for a loose ball and delivering a perfect seated bounce pass to Hamadeh for a layup that fired up the crowd. Deerfield closed the half on a 4-0 run, thanks to Hawk Okpokwasili ’25’s putback and Rodriguez Pastor’s baseline floater, securing a 25-19 lead at halftime.
In the second half, NMH surged with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to one point, but Deerfield quickly responded. Okpokwasili grabbed an offensive rebound and passed to Hynds, who buried a clutch three-pointer (28-24). JJ Kicza ’28 entered the game and made an immediate impact, dominating the boards, defending NMH’s top rebounder, and scoring with a smooth up-and-under post move to make it 30-27.
Machnik then took over, scoring the next eight points and extending the lead to 43-30. On the following possession, with an NMH defender charging toward him, Machnik passed to Tucker Gongaware ’26, calling out, “Let it fly!” Gongaware drained the three-pointer, giving Deerfield a commanding 46-32 advantage with just over five minutes to play.
Jay Rich continued his strong passing with a feed to Carter Schloat ’28, while Sam Peake ’28 dazzled the crowd with a one-on-one spin move into a wide-open layup. Both sets of bleachers were packed with fans from two local teams, creating a thrilling atmosphere for the home opener.
