Heading into some rainy Cambridge weather on Saturday, Deerfield emerged with two victories over BB&N (2-0) and Sacred Heart (2-1).
In the opening match against BB&N, the teams stayed close throughout, but it was Deerfield who was able to get one or two extra points per rotation to take the lead. The Knights played good defense that kept rallies going, but Deerfield’s hitting and serving were strong enough to take the first set 25-22. In the second set, BB&N did a nice job putting up multiple blockers on hitters, so the Big Green started to use tips effectively to get points. Deerfield had a lead that BB&N erased before Deerfield was able to take the 2nd and final set, 26-24.
After a short break to rehydrate and take in some calories, Deerfield took on Sacred Heart. After an initially slow start, Deerfield started to put in more serves and allowed our blockers (led by Harmoni Dobbins ‘26 and Sophie Kamil ‘26) to gain several points with their strong blocking. Hitters Evelyn Kunde ‘26 and Georgia Ball ‘25 had some great kills on the outside while setters Charlotte Coody ‘26 and Emerson Lewis ‘28 moved the ball around well and Deerfield took the first set 25-14. In the second set, Deerfield continued to play strongly, and it looked like they would take a straight set victory, but Sacred Heart played intelligently and Deerfield started to make some unforced errors that brought Sacred Heart the lead and eventually allowed them to take the set, 23-25. After a good chat in the huddle between sets, Deerfield came out strongly in the deciding set, getting out to an early lead that they did not relinquish. Defensive players Greta Trapp ‘25 and Zoe Gavros ‘26 made good passes that put our setters and hitters in good positions to take advantage of opportunities. The final set score was 25-12.
Thanks to BB&N for hosting and best of luck to both teams in the rest of their seasons.
Our next match is at home on Wednesday against a strong Loomis squad; first serve is scheduled for 3:30 pm in the Barn.
