Led by braces from co-captain Cole Higgins ’26 and Marty Rodriguez Pastor ’28, the boys junior B footballers defeated Suffield Academy 4-0 on September 28th at home on the lower fields. The team had more subs at their disposal this week, welcoming Kevin Lu ’28 and Francesco Palomo ’28, back to the bench. With the win, the team ran their record to 4-0 on the season and their undefeated streak against Suffield to 9 games, dating back to 2018.
On a beautiful fall day on the lower fields, Quad Squad weren’t able to get out to the same fast start that they did in other recent wins. Despite stringing together numerous passes and creating multiple good scoring chances, the Suffield keeper was up to the task and turned away all threats. Meanwhile, Suffield weren’t able to generate many of their own chances and much of the initial part of the game was played exclusively on their half of the field. Finally, in the 13th minute, Rodriguez Pastor found the back of the net with his 4th goal of the season to give Deerfield the 1-0 lead. While Deerfield kept Suffield on their heels for the next 20 minutes, they weren’t able to add to the lead. Just before the half, in the 35th minute, a Suffield handball in the box lead to a penalty kick that Rodriguez Pastor converted with an unstoppable, bar-down rocket to increase the lead to 2-0. In the 2nd half, Deerfield got off to a much faster start, when Higgins slotted home a Lu cross in the 39th minute to increase the lead to 3-0. Higgins sealed the game for Deerfield with a late goal in the 67th minute – his 11th of the season – for the final 4-0 margin. Magnus Selvig ’26 and late sub Coleman Keller ’28 combined for the clean sheet in goal, the team’s 4th of the season. Quad Squad will be back in action on Wednesday, October 2nd with a road trip to Hardwick, MA to face the Eagle Hill School with a 3:00 pm kickoff.
