Under a baking sun, members of the Deerfield Girls’ Cross-Country team showed tenacity and commitment in both races (the 3K and the 5K) of this year’s Brush Invitational, named after the long-time Latin teacher and running coach Peter Brush. Of the 29 runners from 5 different schools who competed in the girls’ 3K, the first 16 to cross the line were Deerfield runners, many quite new to running (and/or to DA). Two returning runners, Elizabeth Kelly and Tri-Captain Ginger Bernstein, crossed the finish line with clasped hands in 14:10 minutes, sharing first place in a show of friendship and speed. In the 5K race, with 36 runners from six schools and five Deerfield runners finishing, Skye Georgiadis was DA’s first to cross the finish line, placing 3rd and shaving 10 seconds off her time from last year in a race whose winning times were two minutes slower than last year. 9th-grader Liesel Stitch of DA wasn’t far behind in the 5K, finishing in 6th place. It was a hot day, but a successful competition for GXC!
