Rowing (Girls): Varsity vs. Exeter (05/04/24 3:00 PM)

Event Details

The Deerfield girls’ rowing team traveled to Hanover, NH  to compete against Hanover High School and Phillips Exeter Academy.  The weather was fantastic: partly cloudy, warm, mild headwind and flat water!  A big thanks to the host school, Hanover, for organizing this regatta!

Full race results can be found here.

In the first race of the afternoon for the girls’ team, the crew of Valerie Trevino ‘26, Izzy Cericola ‘24, Plum Schiff ‘27, Sylvie Sobotka ‘26, Ella Waag ‘26, Cecy Yazwinski ‘27, Lucy Linnenbach ‘27, Edie Huffard ‘25, and Maggie Monroe ‘26  raced against Hanover High School and Exeter. After a strong start, it was a battle down the course between Deerfield and Hanover High School. Nearing the thousand meter mark, Hanover started to separate from Deerfield.  In the closing stages of the race Hanover was able to extend their lead to a boat length over Deerfield; the Deerfield 4v showed great persistence and tried hard to push back into Hanover’s lead but ran out of water at the finish and came in a close second place with a time of 6:16.4 behind Hanover’s 6:13.6.

The next race was the girls’ third boat of Audrey Steffensen ‘26, Allie Kostiuk ‘25, Anneke Wittink ‘25, Izzy Ramirez ‘25, Olivia Port ‘26, Holly Bernstein ‘26, Riley Farmer ‘26, Kate Andrews ‘27, and Mia Senturk ‘24.  This group had a great row against crews from Hanover and Exeter.  This race highlighted some great progress over the last week! Making quick use of a strong starting sequence, Deerfield moved through both Exeter and Hanover High School to gain the lead early in the race. In the middle second of the race, the crew from Deerfield began to separate from the rest of the pack; they continued to extend their lead over the competition, gaining open water over their competitors. With a strong sprint, Deerfield finished with an open water lead over both Exeter (2nd) and Hanover (3rd).

Deerfield’s crew of Charlotte Steffensen ‘25, Jane Bannon ‘26, Hazel Patton ‘26, Charlotte Coody ‘26, Addie Williams-Ness ‘26, Sloane Celli ‘27, Gigi Selvig ‘27, Liv Boe ‘25, and Jenny Jin ‘24 raced crews from Hanover and Exeter in the girls’ second boat.  This turned out to be a terrific race for Deerfield.  After a strong start by all three teams, Deerfield managed a small margin over both Exeter and Hanover.  They held to a narrow lead during the first 500m but used a middle section to build their margin over Exeter.  They remained composed against a persistent crew from Exeter.  By the finish, Deerfield crossed in a time of 5:37.9, ahead of Exeter in 5:46.2 and Hanover in 6:05.6.  This group continues to make improvements to their racing every week!

Towards the end of the afternoon’s racing the crew of  Emi Takegami ‘25, Elizabeth Kelly ‘25, Fiona Van Nice ‘25, Mary O’Shea ‘25, Anna Ogborne ‘25, Teagan Farley ‘26, Tatum Lowe ‘25, Melinda Aznar Klein ‘25, and Margot McAuliffe ‘24 raced against crews from Hanover and Exeter.  The crew had a great start, but found themselves trailing Exeter by a few seats after the opening strokes of the race.  Through the middle, Exeter established a half-length lead over Deerfield and the two crews moved away from Hanover.  Deerfield remained composed and persistent and came back into the leading Exeter crew.  Even with a strong sprinting sequence, DA could not come through a very strong group from Exeter and they fell just short at the finish line.  Exeter crossed the finish first in a time of 5:22.0, ahead of Deerfield in 5:22.7, and Hanover in third 5:41.4.

At the end of the race schedule was the Deerfield girls’ fifth boat race.  The crew of Zara Ali ‘27, Ellie Maeda ‘27, Saadia Ouermi ‘27, Skylar Ricketts ‘27, Charlotte McFadzean ‘26, Cecy Yazwinski ‘27, Katherine Goltra ‘27, Annie Egleston ‘27 and Plum Schiff ‘27 raced for the second time this season!  In this boat race, Deerfield faced entries from Exeter and Hanover. After a bumpy start, DA quickly regained their composure and continued in a close race against both competitors. In the middle thousand Deerfield showed their strength and began to move away from Exeter, just trailing behind Hanover High. With 500 meters to go, Deerfield extended their lead over Exeter, coming in second place with a time of 6:43, trailing behind Hanover’s 6:37. It was a strong race and a great showing for our 5V crew!

The racing in Hanover was a great experience for all, especially as it allowed our entire program (boys’ and girls’ teams) to race together at the same event.  Many thanks to the parents who were able to travel to Hanover and view the racing!  Go Big Green!
