Tennis (Girls): Varsity vs. Groton (04/06/24 3:00 PM)

Event Details

Deerfield’s Girls Varsity Tennis took to the courts for the squad’s first home contest of the season on Saturday. Both teams looked to build on the success of their respective previous matches.

Third doubles proved to be the most competitive match of the first phase. Devon Coleman and Kate MacKenzie battled fiercely in a back and forth affair. Credit goes to Groton’s third doubles pairing who earned the win in a 7-5 tie break. It’s worth noting that second doubles team, Linnea Dreslin and Giorgia Santore, are putting things together and growing into a dynamic pair.

Deerfield found traction at first, fifth, and sixth singles as the afternoon wore on. Camila Cushman won her first set decisively before dropping the second 4-6. Groton ultimately took the third set tiebreaker 10-5. Devon Coleman’s match followed a similar arc– each player earning a set before a tie breaker going Groton’s way. Devon’s resilience helped her bounce back in the second set and was demonstrative of the team’s no-quit attitude on every court.

Senior, Natalia Sanders, earned a win at the top singles position. Dominant serves and relentless baseline play vaulted Natalia to a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

The highlight of the day was Deerfield’s grit. No player wavered or conceded a single point without a fight. The team looks to build on all the positive growth and lessons learned in this match heading into a busy week on the courts. Things get rolling again Wednesday at home with visiting Westminster.
