Deerfield’s girls varsity tennis squad headed south for an afternoon tilt with the Pomfret School on Saturday. Both teams were ready to square off with their opponents as well as the elements. While the sun was shining at last, the spring winds were a factor in these matches.
Playing a no-repeat format, Deerfield was able to put plenty of players on the court for this competition. The doubles matches yielded compelling exchanges on every court. First doubles pair, Devon Coleman and Kate MacKenzie battled for a well-earned 8-4 victory thanks to smart, methodical doubles play. Ava Carvel and Maggie Molson settled in quickly and notched a 8-0 win at second doubles, setting up points from the baseline and winning at the net. Third doubles pair, Camilla Cushman and Alix Smith, found success with penetrating baseline play and decisive volleys.
Deerfield continued its winning ways on the singles courts. Natalia Sanders, Avery Brooker, Giorgia Santore, and Kate McKenzie all won in straight sets.
The day was marked by thoughtful play and great sportsmanship. The team looks ahead to a mid-week match at home with Kingswood Oxford on April 3rd.
