In front of a huge crowd of family and friends, Deerfield Girls Hockey took the ice against a good Loomis squad. We kicked off the afternoon by honoring our five amazing Seniors (Mia Goetzke, Izzy Cericola, Bailey Miller, Annie Dinges and Lauren Sobzcak), and then got down to business as this game had big playoff seeding implications. Though we came out strong, Loomis struck first on the power play, and took a 1-0 lead into the second period. We tied the score early in the second, however, as Annie Dinges ’24 put home a loose puck after great work down low by Ava Giroux ’26, Sophie Frost ’26 and Keira Austen ’26. We took the lead on the very next shift, as Mia Goetzke ’24 found space for herself in the slot, and buried a pass from Austen (Allie Corrieri ’25 earned the second assist). We held our lead until the final minute, when Loomis took advantage of a 6 vs. 4 to send the game into overtime. The extra frame was not our finest play of the afternoon, but Campbell Krotee ’25 was excellent in goal and the game ended in a 2-2 tie. Lauren Sobczak was awarded the hard hat for her unwavering support all season long, and we ended the evening with a wonderful celebration of our seniors in front of family and friends. Thank you so much to all of the families who made this evening happen. For the first time in recent history (we are guessing about twenty years), Deerfield earned a spot in the Elite 8 tournament, and will travel to Andover on Wednesday to take on the #3 seed. We look forward to the opportunity to compete for an extra week!
