The boys junior B footballers ended their longest layoff of the season, defeating Avon Old Farms 7-0 on October 16th after eleven days between games. DOTW Marty Rodriguez Pastor ’28 scored a hat trick and had a beautiful assist to lead the offense, while the defense, led by keeper Magnus Selvig ’26, recorded their 6th clean sheet of the season. Deerfield are now 7-0 on the season, with five games to go.
Unlike many of the previous games, it took nearly the entire first half for Deerfield to get on the board. The team seemed sluggish and rusty after nearly two weeks off and, although they managed numerous shots, none of them seriously threatened the AOF keeper. Many of them were on the ground and the keeper was able to make several key saves to keep the game scoreless. Finally, the team woke up and began putting together some crisp passes towards the middle of the 1st half. In the 25th minute, Rodriguez Pastor selflessly crossed the ball through the box, leaving the AOF keeper helpless, and allowing Kevin Lu ’28 to tap the ball into the back of the net for his 2nd goal of the season. The 1st half ended with Deerfield clinging to a narrow 1-0 lead.
In the 37th minute, Lu struck again from an Emmett Aho ’27 feed to increase the lead to 2-0. From there, the floodgates opened quickly, with Pastor Rodriguez scoring the next three goals (his 7th, 8th and 9th of the season) between the 11th and 15th minutes to open up a 5-0 lead and effectively put the game out of reach. Late goals from Harry Mitchell ’27 (2nd of the season) and Cole Bannon ’28 (making his Quad Squad debut) made the final margin 7-0. The defense played particularly well, keeping AOF on their half of the field for much of the game.
Quad Squad will hit the road for their next three games, starting with a visit to the Eaglebrook School on October 19th. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
