It was a beautiful day for field hockey at and overcast, as the Deerfield Academy JV Field Hockey team took the field against Northfield Mount Herman. Despite a few injuries and multiple colds, our players all wanted to be part of the game no matter if they were feeling at their best or not. We are proud of the toughness and togetherness of this team. Every player was critical in this game, as we needed to substitute often to allow our sick players to rest. About halfway into the first quarter of the game, Rose Manning dribbled into the circle and sent the ball toward the goal, allowing Ella Waag to tip it in for our first goal of the game and her first goal of the season! We dominated the field for the first quarter but lost a bit of steam allowing NMH to spend some time near our goal, though our defense kept them from scoring. We came back full of energy in the second half, both those on the field and those cheering from our sideline. Linnea Knox was a calm and steady force who seemed almost in slow motion as she carefully took the ball away from the other team time and time again. Her block tackle was impenetrable. The fourth quarter started with us still leading 1-0, until Campbell Ardrey sprinted to the goal to tip in a shot from Emily Bruno during a corner. With under 2 minutes left in the game Ella scored her second goal of the season by tipping in a strong shot from Charlotte Steffensen. Overall, this game had a lot of heart and commitment from the entire team. The final score was a win for Deerfield 3-0. We look forward to playing a very competitive game against St. Paul’s School on Saturday at 3:30 PM.
