Deerfield Girls Varsity Hockey took the ice on Friday night at home against New Hampton. We had narrowly defeated them at the Cushing tournament, and knew that we would be in for a tight game. We were able to open the scoring on the power play in the first period: Brady Wierl ’26 sent the puck up to Amelia Healey ’27, who fed Sophie Frost ’27, and Frost picked her spot with a great shot for the lead. The second period was a different story, as we struggled with New Hampton’s strength and speed. They were able to score two goals, sending us into the final frame down by one. This team sure showed its great and resilience, putting together an outstanding final seventeen minutes and absolutely dominating the play. Olivia Austen ’27 tied the score, finishing off a feed in front from Annie Dinges ’24. Then, on a play that sent the bench into an excited frenzy, Charlotte McFadzean ’26 made a great play to get the puck to Kate Doucette ’27, who took her space and fed Julia Tamul ’25. Tamul made a great play in tight to put the puck up top, giving us a lead we would never relinquish. Finally, in an incredible individual effort, Dinges stole the puck in our defensive zone on the backcheck, went through all five New Hampton players up the ice and buried an insurance goal for us. We never let New Hampton get any momentum in the final minutes, working tirelessly and keeping the puck mostly in the offensive zone. Campbell Krotee ’25 played well in goal to earn another win, and Tamul got the hard hat for her incredible work ethic and positive spirit. This was a great team win, with our depth really being the difference in the final period. Many thanks to the parents for providing a delicious BBQ dinner after the game! We’ll set out for a road contest against Taft on Saturday afternoon.
