The boys J.V. Hockey team hosted a talented Hotchkiss team on Saturday and played a one of their best start-to-finish games of the season coming away with a tightly contested 4-3 win.
There were many good moments in this game but the one area of great improvement for the team was lowering their penalty minutes. Only three penalties on the day allowed the team to play at even strength the majority of the game. Hotchkiss too was focused and the two teams played a fast-paced up and down kind of a game with both teams getting their chances to score.
Jack Welch would get the first goal of the game (his first of three on the day) in the second period off a beautiful passing combo with teammates Leo Ma, and Will Kertesz. This goal energized the team and two minutes later he would score again on a power play with assists going to Alexander Rolfe and Alex Sotirhos. Before the end of the second period Hotchkiss would get a goal back stuffing home a loose puck cutting our lead in half.
The third period a total of 4 goals would be scored – two by each team. Jack Welch would tally his third goal of the contest extending the lead back to two goals 3-1. Hotchkiss scored again and then with 1:20 left in the game defenseman Tripp Woytowicz sniped a goal from the right circle. This bumped the score to 4-2 and would prove to be the eventual game winner. Hotchkiss scored their fourth goal as time ran out in the game. Final score was 4-3 Deerfield.
The defensive corps of Woytowicz, Callender, Fleck, Hunter and new to the defensive ranks Cooper Brozek had a very solid game keeping the Hotchkiss forward from gaining momentum. Connor Hevesey had his work cut out for him and did a good job keeping his team in the game.
Next up for the Doors is the always talented Cardigan Mountain team this Wednesday. We’ll travel there and see if we can improve on last season’s defeat. Should be a great game!
