The Deerfield Boys JV hockey team hit the road Wednesday to travel to the Cardigan Mountain School in Canaan N.H.
The team on this day was comprised of 11 skaters and 2 goalies as many players were left behind due to illness and injury.
Nonetheless, we had a great core of players and we were determined to give the talented Cardigan team a good game and possibly steal one on their home ice sheet.
The first period saw limited offensive push from the Deerfield team and Cardigan jumped out to a 2-0 lead, one of the goals scored on the power play. Not happy with the initial period, Big Green dug deeper and the effort began to rise. We started creating offensive opportunities and the defense began to distribute the puck with greater consistency. Cardigan would score their 2nd power-play goal midday through the 2nd period and that would be their last goal of the day.
The thirds period saw both teams creating opportunities to score and it wasn’t until the final minute of the game that Deerfield would score its only goal on the day off their power play. Jack Welch would thwart the shutout bid scoring a goal with 27 seconds left off a nice pass from line mate Will Kertesz.
Hats off to a fine effort on the day starting with goalie Jarron Crosbie. A short bench on the day is an understatement! Here is a list of players that were able to make the trip and play hard:
Conor Hevesy, Ryan Stenzler, Gray Altemeyer, Griffin Mariani, Blake Donnellan, Cole Rorick, Will Kertesz, Jack Welch, Rob Callender, Tripp Woytowicz, Cooper Brozek and Griffin Cepiel.
Let’s get some rest and finish strong in February!
