The Deerfield Boys JV hockey team hosted the Big Blue from Andover on Saturday and was able to skate away with a 5-2 win in a game that was closely contested throughout. It was the second contests of the weekend for the Doors, having scored a victory at NMH the night before 9-3. The team was ready for their next challenge as they met early Saturday in preparation for the 11:00 a.m. game.
In the first period Deerfield carried the play with freshman Will Kertesz scoring the only 2 goals in the period giving his team a 2-0 lead after one. The first goal was off a nifty wraparound that had the Andover goalie beat by a small margin. His second goal came off a beautiful pass from line mate Julian Navab. Will one-timed the pass from Navab and the quick-release was too much for the Andover goalie.
The second period saw both teams create several good scoring opportunities, but neither team capitalized and the score remained at 2-0 in favor of Deerfield.
The third period started off with a renewed energy from the visitors. Right away in the first minute they cut the Deerfield lead in half with a loose puck snipe in close to the Deerfield goal. Clinging to a one-goal lead Big Green created several outstanding scoring opportunities but couldn’t register their third goal. Then with 8 minutes left in the game Andover scored the game tying goal and all the momentum was shifting in their direction. Our team dug deep and with just under 6 minutes left in the game Alexander Rolfe would score the game-winner off a scramble in front. Then less than a minute later jack Welch drove home a laser from the right side cleanly beating the Andover outstretch goalie giving Deerfield a 4-2 lead. Alexander Rolf would score again with under a minute to play closing out the scoring in a 5-2 win.
Julian Navab assisted on 3 of Deerfield’s 5 goals. Nick Gerard was solid all game long in the net for Deerfield. The line of Cole Rorick, Blake Donnellan, and Griffin Mariani played a very solid two-game all afternoon. Coming up this week are Williston and Choate.
