Playing our first regular-season matches of the year, Deerfield took the long road trip to Greenwich, CT on Saturday, emerging with a victory over Sacred Heart (2-0) but falling to BB&N (1-2).
In the opening match against Sacred Heart, high energy from the whole team, strong serving from Loran McGruder ‘24, and well-placed hitting from Evie Mokarow ‘24 allowed Deerfield to get out to an early lead. Sacred Heart played good defense to keep rallies going and extend points, but Deerfield’s defense was able to pick up balls coming over the net with Sabina Frosk ‘24 providing strong serve receive and defense. Harmoni Dobbins ‘26 provided excellent blocking in the middle. Deerfield stayed in front, but Sacred Heart kept it close the whole way and the final set scores were 25-22 and 25-18.
After a short break, Deerfield faced BB&N and it was the Knights who came out more focused and with better energy to go up early. Deerfield was able to make less unforced errors to close the gap down the stretch, but BB&N took the first set, 16-25. In the second set, Deerfield was more effective with the balls that were sent our way and was able to use hitting from Evelyn Kunde ‘26 along with well-placed setting from Charlotte Coody ‘26 and Greta Trapp ‘25 to win the 2nd set, 25-21, and force a deciding 3rd set. Too many unforced errors by the Big Green, coupled with strong serving from BB&N, allowed the Knights to take the 3rd set and match, 14-25.
Thanks to Sacred Heart for hosting.
Our next match is on the road on Wednesday against an always strong Loomis squad; first serve is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
