The Big Green girls varsity soccer team traveled to Pomfret on Saturday and earned the team’s first win of the season.
In the first half, multiple players created several great scoring chances for Deerfield, but were unable to convert and the scored remained 0-0 at half. At half time and with wise words from Hazel Patton, the team committed to scoring in the second half. Indeed, the Big Green carried their first half momentum into the second half and Kaelin Creagh netted the first goal of the game on a high flighted cross that sailed in at the back post. Shortly thereafter, Kaelin sent in another cross into the box that Claire Kepner converted into the back of the net for her first ever Big Green goal. Similarly, Kaelin sent in another cross into the box off a corner kick and Blythe Gering finished it into the back of the net to give the Big Green a 3-0 lead. Kaelin rounded out the scoring on her second goal of the game by driving a shot from range that found the back of the net.
With the score 4-0 and in the final 10 minutes of play. Pomfret continued to press for a goal of their own and converted a penalty kick and again put a shot from distance in the back of the net to cut the lead to 4-2.
At the final whistle, the Big Green were victorious and celebrated the big win coming off the field. The squad will look to carry the momentum from today into Wednesday’s game at Williston.
