On a beautiful Wednesday afternoon, the Big Green girls varsity soccer team kicked-off their 2023 campaign in their home opener against ISL opponent, Brooks School. With the a crowd surrounding and cheering on the squad on Fair Family Field and after over two weeks of training together, the Big Green were ready for the opening whistle. As it was the first game of the season for both teams, each side opened the game cautiously and grew into the game. The Big Green were hungry in the offensive third, creating several goal scoring chances in the run of play from crosses in from the flank and some longer range shots. Both Kaelin Creagh ’24 and Alex Hermsdorf ’25 rifled shots in the opening half just missing the goal. Allie Corrieri ’25 nearly missed the goal on a long range set piece. Approaching halfway through the first half, Brooks capitalized on a poor clearance and scored the first goal of the game. At halftime, the score was 1-0 in favor of the visitors while the Big Green held the advantage in shots taken. Entering the second half, the Big Green pushed forward for the equalizer creating great chances along the flank from Harlowe Healey ’24, Eleanor DuPont ’26 and Claire Kepner ‘25. Nearing the end of the second half, Brooks got in behind the Big Green backline and capitalized on their chance to go up 2-0. The Big Green continued to press in the attack and created great goal scoring chances but could not beat the talented Brooks goalkeeper. The Big Green had a great defensive performance, neutralized many of Brooks’ attacking opportunities and held their shots on goal really low. At the final whistle the score was 2-0 in favor of Brooks. The Big Green will return action on Wednesday, September 20 when they host Westminster School at 3:30pm.
