Deerfield opened their season today against a tough and talented Salisbury team determined to spoil the day for Big Green. As the game got underway, it was clear the match would be a battle. Deerfield opened with some excellent and sustained pressure and possession, ultimately culminating in some dangerous offensive chances. Unfortunately, Deerfield failed to capitalize and the game remained scoreless deep into the first half. Deerfield finally broke through in about the 43rd minute when Jeffry Kamil played an incredible free kick from about 40 yards out to a streaking Gavin Rigney on the back post. Gavin buried the header to put Deerfield up 1-0 just before halftime. The game remained scoreless in the second half with excellent chances from both clubs. Kai Darrell made a few timely saves in net and Deerfield was able to escape with the 1-0 win. It was a great way to start the season for what has become an extremely tight-knit group of players. Gavin Rigney, Barack Mwesigwa, Ralph Vogel, Zach Li, and Cooper Johnson deserve a ton of credit for holding the Salisbury attack scoreless for 90 minutes. Jonny Scagel and Owen Tymchuk were also pivotal pieces to Deerfield’s attack, including two drawn PK’s from Scagel.
Up next, Deerfield takes on a talented Suffield squad on the road.
