On Wednesday, September 27th, the boys junior B footballers faced local rival Eaglebrook School on a beautiful fall afternoon on the lower fields. Deerfield played a complete game on both sides of the ball and came out with a 5-1 victory. With the win, the team moves to 2-0 on the season. Deerfield took the lead nearly right off the bat, with Matias Cushman ’25 slotting home his first goal of the season in the 5th minute to make the score 1-0. After some back and forth play that included a few EBS chances, Noah Bennett ’27 scored in the 13th minute on a beautiful ball from a Vail Brokaw ’27 corner kick to double the lead at 2-0. Despite a few more chances for both teams, the remainder of the half was scoreless, with Deerfield taking a 2-0 lead into half-time. In the 35th minute, Emmett Aho ’27 nearly scored a beautiful long-range goal to increase the lead, but it hit the crossbar and fell harmlessly away. Ten minutes later, Deerfield scored again, with Cushman taking a nice feed from Jack Keller ’26 and putting it into the back of the net for his second goal of the game. While it seemed for a moment that the lead might be insurmountable, EBS pulled a goal back in the 48th minute to cut the lead to 3-1 and give the visitors some hope. Just a few minutes later, however, Keller earned a penalty kick after being taken down in the box. After the keeper made the initial save, Keller alertly jumped on the rebound and put it home for a 4-1 lead in the 51st minute. Right back PJ Block finished the scoring in the 54th minute, coming forward on a rare offensive opportunity, to give Deerfield a 5-1 lead. After two home games to start the season, Quad Squad will hit the road for a 2:30 pm start against Suffield Academy on Saturday, September 30th.
