The boys JV hockey team was, once again, on the road this Saturday travelling to Watertown Ct. to face off with the Rhinos from the Taft School. This was our first game back from the long winter weekend so the team was ready to compete. In the opening period Deerfield flooded the Taft goalie with a barrage of shots and took the early lead; 3-0 after the first 15 minutes. In this period Jack Welch had two and Billy Weller scored one as well. The line of Jack Welch, Matteo Alvarez, and Cooper Brozek would tally three on the day in total as a unit and created many more chances along the way. Weller’s goal came off a shot from the point which deflected off a Taft skater into their goal.
The visitors would score twice in the second period to build their lead to a 5-0 lead. This would be the eventual final score. Alexander Rolfe had a Rob Callender point shot deflect off his body for our fourth goal. Matteo Alvarez would tally a nice power play goal firing a hard shot past the Taft goaltender.
Good credit to the entire team as we played a disciplined game throughout. Forwards Cole Rorick, Sawyer Johnson, Jarron Crosbie stepped into larger roles today and played very well when called upon. Our defensive six-pack (Weller, Callender, Woytowicz, Gisonni, Fleck and Belaire were too much for the Taft offense. In net this game was Nick Gerard getting another shutout on the year. Alex Sotirhos deserves a shout out as he logged many minutes while centering two lines on the day giving his team a four-line rotation.
The week ahead has the team playing two home games!!! We have been road – warriors all season and playing twice at home this coming week will be well received! Eaglebrook on Wednesday will present a challenge. This is our second meeting with them and they are always a skilled and competitive group!
