On Wednesday, February 1st the Boys JV Hockey team hosted the Cardigan Mountain team. A very skilled and talented team, Cardigan came into the game with only one loss on the season.
The first period was a close checking, up and down fifteen minutes with both teams getting some good scoring chances. Nick Gerard was in the net for Deerfield and he kept the visitors scoreless early on.
At the nine minute mark of the second period Cardigan would score what proved to be the game winner. They would add a second goal in the middle period to take a 2-0 lead into the final stanza.
For much of the third period the play went back and forth as Deerfield tried to build some momentum and get themselves on the scoreboard. However, with seven minutes left in the game a major penalty was called upon a Deerfield player giving us a non-releasable four minute penalty. The Cardigan power play unit went to work and scored two goals during the penalty cinching the win for themselves. Give credit to Cardigan who came and played very well on the road this day. Deerfield worked hard all afternoon but could never generate any lasting momentum.
The team has a long winter weekend break and won’t play again until Sat. Feb. 11 when they travel to Watertown Ct. to take on Taft. Game time is at 3:30 p.m.
