Deerfield finished in third place at the Cushing tournament, defeating New Hampton 1-0. We played a strong two opening periods, but couldn’t find the back of the net despite lots of chances. Very early on in the third we lost a player to injury, but the whole team really rallied and played hard together. Brady Wierl ‘26, Peyton Wierl ‘26, Gia Thompson ‘26 and Ava Giroux ‘26 were outstanding on the penalty kill, and all six defensemen made good decisions all over the ice. With about four minutes to go a Bailey Miller ‘24 shot from the point found the back of the net (assists to B. Wierl and Mia Goetzke ‘24), and we hung on for the win. Sophie Frost ‘26 and Olivia Austen ‘27 both made key plays in the final minute, and Campbell Krotee was excellent in goal. Annie Dinges ‘24 and Allie Corrieri ‘25 were named to the all-tournament team, and Amelia Healey ‘27 earned the hard hat today for her confident play. This was a great weekend of team first hockey, and we look forward to continuing the positive momentum in 2024!
