Deerfield Boys Varsity Hockey started their season strong with a 5-2 win against Groton this Saturday in their home opener. In the first period, Justin Tavares ‘25 scored the first goal of the game with assists from Tom Molson ‘24 and Jakub Kohn ‘24. Ending the first period tied with one goal, Deerfield looked to come out with more strength in the following period. The physicality of both teams increased throughout the second period. Despite this, Justin Tavares was able to find the back of the net once again, assisted again by linemates Molson and Kohn. Going into the third period, tied two-to-two, Deerfield was able to connect, resulting in two goals: first from Lance Roberts ‘25 assisted by Cam Herr ‘24, and the second from Nate Watson ‘26 assisted by Tavares and Zachary Chehade ‘25. Deerfield maintained their pressure, resulting in the game’s last goal, an empty netter by Justin Tavares, with one minute remaining. John Tolve ‘24 came up with numerous big saves to keep Deerfield in the game. The team is hoping to keep this momentum going forward on the road for our next game on Wednesday against NMH!
