The boys J.V. hockey team, looking to go into the winter Holiday break on a high note, hosted Winchendon’s Varsity B team on this last Wednesday before students travel home. The end result was not what we had hoped for losing by a score of 5-1. Give credit to the visitors who scored 3 goals in the opening period and buzzed their opponents relentlessly. Finally, mid-way through the second period Julian Navab, with an assist from Alex Sotirhos, found the back of the net with 7:09 remaining in the period. The goal ignited energy on the Deerfield team and for the rest of the second period we outshot our opponents by a wide margin. Winchendon’s goalie had a great game and didn’t allow us to sustain any consistent momentum. The second period ended with the visitors holding a 2-goal lead at 3-1.
Big Green started the third period on a power play and with a determination to climb back into the game. All was going to plan early on as the power play unit generated several superb scoring opportunities. However, once again, the Winchendon goalie and defense kept us off the scoreboard and in the last 4 minutes of the game the visitors would add to more goals making it a 5-1 victory for them.
We had great effort from many throughout the lineup. Connor Hevesey in net was solid and he has been a great addition to the team all season thus far. We were able to roll with 4 lines and 5 defensemen throughout. The effort was there! The puck didn’t bounce our way in several key moments and Winchendon worked hard for the entire game. As we head into the break there is much to look forward to in January and February. Our mix of upper-class leadership and new and younger arrivals to the program will gel more and we’ll get back to playing some good hockey once again.
Have a great Holiday break and we’ll see everyone back for practice on Jan. 3rd!
