The boys J. V. hockey team officially opened their 2023-2024 season today earning an overtime 1-1 tie against neighboring Eaglebrook School. The visitors would score first late in the first period on a loose puck scramble in front of the Deerfield goal. Connor Hevesey was between the pipes for Deerfield and this goal would be the only puck to get by him on the afternoon. He played very well and continues to play a big part on this team early in the season.
As the second period began the momentum began to swing our way. All three lines were pressing the opponents deep in their zone producing multiple chances. The Eaglebrook goalie brought his “A” game to the rink as he was outstanding for 45 minutes. At the 2:20 mark late in the second period Jack Welch finally punched one home and equaled the score at one apiece. He was assisted on his goal by newcomer Luke Donnellan. Deerfield applied intense pressure for the final 2 minutes of the second period but was unable to secure a go ahead goal.
The third period and the five minute overtime saw great action and Deerfield had several great opportunities to score. Eaglebrook hung in there and produced some chances of their own too. Today, we played much better than the game last Saturday as we tightened up our team defense, got lots of offensive opportunities by all three top lines, and had solid play by our defensive crew. Game puck went to the line of Cole Rorick, Griffin Mariani, and Will Kertesz for their commitment for playing great two-way hockey.
Next up for the Doors is Choate. Game start time is 1:00 p.m. at home.
