The boys JV hockey team hosted rival Choate in an early season game Saturday afternoon. Both teams are still figuring out lineups in the early part of the season. Today, the hosts had the better day as the Doors outscored the Boars 4-2.
The first period saw end to end action with both teams creating some scoring chances. Deerfield goalie Connor Hevesey was solid all afternoon and in the first period he shut down any Choate opportunities to score with his stellar play. It wouldn’t be until the 1:54 mark until Deerfield got on the board when Jack Welch one-timed a perfectly timed pass from Will Kertesz to the back of the net making the score 1-0.
Deerfield’s second goal came early in the second period when Cole Rorick picked up a loose puck in the center ice area and out-skated the Choate defense en route to scoring a breakaway goal. Jarron Crosbie help set this play up with great hustle in the defensive zone that created the loose puck.
Choate would claw their way back into the game minutes later scoring a short-handed goal on some sloppy play by the Deerfield unit on the ice. Then with less than a minute to go in the second period Tripp Woytowicz would deliver the team’s third goal with a nice hustle assist going to Welch.
The third period was dominated by a hungry Deerfield team. The Choate goalie was outstanding all day long but with just three minutes played in the period Leo Ma fired a long-distance shot that beat him low on the blocker side.
This win brings the team record to 2-0-1. Next up is Winchendon here on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m.
