Playing in front of a great home crowd, Deerfield defeated St. Paul’s on Wednesday by a score of 3-0.
Deerfield got right out to an early lead in the first set on the strength of nice serves from Loran McGruder’24; setting from Charlotte Coody ‘26; hitting from Evie Mokarow ‘24, Harmoni Dobbins ‘26, and Georgia Ball ‘25; and great passing from Sabina Frosk ‘24. The Big Green kept the pressure on throughout the first set on their way to a 25-9 first set win.
In the second set, St. Paul’s came out strong and Deerfield struggled with its serve receive to allow the Big Red to get out to an early lead which they kept extending throughout the set. It wasn’t until Sophie Kamil ‘26 got the serve at 16-21 that Deerfield proceeded to help tie the match at 21, supported by great hits from Evelyn Kunde ‘26 and blocking from Margot McAuliffe ‘24 and Dobbins. St. Paul’s continued to push the Big Green throughout in the latter part of the set before Deerfield took the set, 28-26.
The third set saw more of a repeat of the first set, with Deerfield getting out to a stronger start, including excellent setting from Greta Trapp ‘25 and passing from Emily Rice ‘24. Zoe Galaburda ‘26 also brought strong serving and Deerfield was able to take the set and the match, 25-16.
Big thanks to St. Paul’s for making the trip and to the Deerfield fans for their energy and support.
Look for another huge crowd on Saturday morning when Deerfield takes on Choate at 11am in the Barn.
