The boys junior B footballers played perhaps their best match of the season against Vermont Academy, but still suffered their first loss on November 4th, dropping a 3-1 decision. With the loss, the team’s record ends at 7-1-1 for the season. The scoring started quickly for VA in the 5th minute, after several key saves from keeper Arvin Mou ’25. A rebound came out to a VA player, who volleyed it nicely into the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Deerfield nearly responded a few minutes later, after several nice passes set Jack Keller ’26 up for a good shot, but it was saved by the VA keeper. The play for the next 20 minutes was relatively even, with both teams having a few chances, although VA certainly had the edge in time of possession. In the 26th minute, a nice cross through the Deerfield box resulted in an easy tap in and the visitors doubled their lead to 2-0. The half ended with the same score, although it certainly didn’t feel like Deerfield were out of the game. The first few minutes of the 2nd half were eventful, with a VA player being given a yellow card in the 41st minute and the visitors scoring again in the 44th minute to effectively put the game away at 3-0. Deerfield didn’t stop fighting, however, and that paid off in the 61st minute when Keller found the back of the net to cut the lead to 3-1 and provide the final margin. Quad Squad played well, despite being overmatched, and particularly strong performances were turned in by Ryan Stenzler ’27 at sweeper, Teddy Gonzalez ’26 at stopper, and Vail Brokaw ’27 at right forward. Although numerous players should move up next season, with no seniors, Quad Squad will no doubt have another strong team next season.
