In the frigid conditions of this early November afternoon, Deerfield’s thirds soccer team traveled down with their JV counterparts to Avon Old Farms. The wintry chill made for good motivation for the boys to keep running and stay warm. Deerfield came out of the gate strong with a goal by holding midfielder Jack Zhunio ’27, straight through the center past several of Avon’s defenders. After an accidental, slippery own goal by Deerfield and a bizarre mix of hail and sleet at the end of the first half, the score at halftime was tied at 1-1. Then, in the second half, Zhunio assisted himself to make another stunning goal. Today’s game was a great reminder of what this year’s thirds team can achieve, especially after several tough games, and even with a thin bench. Avon was the team’s final away game of the season, and the team looks forward to its next home-turf game against Williston Northampton’s JV team.
