Hosting a NEPSGVA Class A quarterfinal match on Wednesday, #4-seeded Deerfield defeated a talented #5-seeded BB&N squad, 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-18).
In the first set, the score opened and stayed tight until BB&N finally pushed out to a lead of 12-16 on strong serving and some errors from Deerfield. BB&N continued to build on that lead and had set point at 16-24 when a late rally from Deerfield (on serving from Evelyn Kunde ‘26) tightened the score to 21-24 before the Knights were able to take the first set.
Deerfield built on that strong finish to get out right to an early lead in the second set, 7-1. Credit to BB&N for their strong hitting and blocking which kept the score tight and pushed Deerfield to be smart in their shot placement and disciplined about their blocking and defense.
In the third set, Deerfield’s blocking and hitting really started to find its rhythm with front row players Evie Mokarow ‘24, Kunde, Harmoni Dobbins ‘26, Sophie Kamil ‘26, Margot McAuliffe ‘24, and Georgia Ball ‘25 playing key roles. The defense (led by Sabina Frosk ‘24, Emily Rice ‘24, and Loran McGruder ‘24) made smart adjustments that allowed them to pick up the well-hit balls from BB&N.
The fourth set continued to see smart setting from Greta Trapp ‘25 and Charlotte Coody ‘26 that allowed multiple hitters to get involved. The match ended with two consecutive aces from Mokarow.
Thanks to BB&N for making the trip and for a great afternoon of volleyball! And thank you to the Deerfield crowd for showing up and supporting!
With the win, Deerfield earns the opportunity to play in the semi-finals against #1-seed Loomis. First serve is at 2pm at Loomis.
