At home on a cloudy and mild Wednesday afternoon, we beat Westy 7-1. We initiated play, with Westminster counter-attacking, for pretty much all 80 minutes. In the first half, we hit the crossbar twice and both posts, finally finding the twine on a header by Kevin Gonzalez ’24 after a save and cleanup cross. Westy countered on a mixup in our back line, finishing after a few nifty moves around our defenders. After this sole error, our back line played with more tenacity and organization, frustrating Westy on every possession. Still more chances came our way but the half ended 1-1. The Deerfield boys were hungry at halftime and they came out buzzing. Jack Borg ’27 put in two goals in quick succession on strong individual efforts, then MacGregor Hynds ’25 potted two more from the right wing, the first coming on a long assist from James Kurto ’25. The floodgates were open at that point. Kevin Gonzalez ’24 completed a nice sequence of passes, parking one far panel and then Andrew Lewis ’25 scored his first goal in three years on this JV squad on a strong looping shot over the keeper. The layoff from Byran Gianvecchio ’26 set up Andrew perfectly. When we are buzzing and passing on the ground, we are finding chances. Our shooting is coming along well, though still a few too many off frame for the coaches’ liking. Overall, this was a team effort and a well-played game, particularly the second half. Now more than halfway through our season, we are proud of our improvements and aim to build momentum!
