We traveled up the hill to Eaglebrook on a warm and sunny Wednesday afternoon and beat the Varsity squad of our neighboring junior boarding 2-1. Perennially, they have a good team and they were as expected today. We used our slight physical advantage early on to control possession, but we weren’t as sharp or fit as we were on Saturday since this was our first day back from long weekend. Finn Knight (’25) was playing holding midfielder for a stint and managed to pooch a weak clearance back into the box and over the defenders. Oscar Sanford (’26) found it and sent a chip shot off the far post and it trickled in. We went to half 1-0. After halftime, Eaglebrook came out with more tenacity and confidence. With our energy flagging, MacGregor Hynds (’25) dashed down the right sideline with the ball, cut it inside, and laid perfect ball to oncoming Jack Borg (’27) who crushed a laser through an outstretched keeper’s hand. 2-0 Deerfield. The remaining 20 minutes of the game was all Eaglebrook and they scored on a strong header on a corner kick. Tai Feng (’26) had some late chances to seal it for us, but he seems to be cursed at the moment. All in all, it was a good win and a solid effort though we have to find another gear in the coming days. Coach Corliss and I were especially proud of this group’s sportsmanship and good spirit when our referee, who was working alone, struggled to make correct calls. We like the way this group takes things in stride and just plays soccer.
