On October 18th, led by a super hat trick by Matias Cushman ’25, the boys junior B footballers defeated Avon Old Farms 6-3 in Avon, CT and raised their record on the season to 4-0. This matchup has traditionally been a back-and-forth affair in the past, with each team winning close matches in recent years, but Deerfield immediately left no doubt as to the outcome of this one. In the 2nd minute, Noah Bennett ’27 scored from a Cushman corner kick to open the scoring. That goal was followed quickly by two of Cushman’s goals, in the 3rd and 4th minutes, to quickly stake Deerfield to a 3-0 lead. Avon finally got the ball out of their defensive end and were threatening when Rowan Dias ’27 committed a foul in the box and gave up a penalty kick. Avon converted the kick in the 13th minute to make the score 3-1 and breathe some life into the home side. Deerfield responded quickly, when John Mandiamy ’25 poked home his first goal of the season in the 19th minute to restore the 3-goal lead. In the 32nd minute, Cushman scored an early candidate for goal of the year, when he volleyed home a Vail Brokaw ’27 shot that ricocheted off the crossbar to increase the lead to 5-1. After some confusion in the Avon back line, Cushman stole an inadvertent pass and slotted home an easy goal to make the lead 6-1 at half-time. In the 2nd half, keeper Arvin Mou ’25 was replaced by Teddy Gonzalez ’26 and some starters rested, while others played in unfamiliar positions. Avon pulled two goals back in the final two minutes of the 2nd half for the final 6-3 margin. After two games on the road, Quad Squad will be back at home on the lower fields for another game against Eaglebrook on family weekend, October 21st at 2:30 pm.
