Deerfield got back in the win column Wednesday with its victory over Suffield’s “Tiger A” team on a perfect autumn afternoon in the Pocumtuck Valley. The scoreboard wasn’t needed in the first half, when DA let itself move at Suffield’s speed and lose its focus. But this close-knit team of players with good soccer intelligence huddled up at halftime and mapped out a path to victory. They wasted no time putting that plan into action in the second half. Just two minutes in, left-winger Isaac Shobola ’27 crossed a ball to captain Luka Kokosadze ’25, who finished with the prettiest shot of the game. Ten minutes later, right wing Jack Wagner ’26—who played the whole game, perennially energizing the offense—kicked a perfect corner, which the team’s leading scorer, Victor Kibuuka ’26, headed in to make it 2-0. At 17’ Wagner added an insurance goal when he and Shobola drove the ball down the field and Wagner touched it to himself through the back line and scored. After the game, the team celebrated the defensive play—especially from fullback Michael Hioe ’27 and center-back captains Henry Shearer ’26 and Sammy Sullivan ’25—that kept Suffield from mounting more than one single offensive attack. Deerfield looks to take the focused and collaborate play they showed themselves capable of today down to Salisbury on Saturday, where they take on Hotchkiss.
