The boys JV hockey team travelled on Saturday to Phillips Andover Academy to take on an undefeated Big Blue team. This is always a great mid-season contest between our schools and this year was no exception. The first period was a tight, up and down, contest and it wasn’t until halfway through the period that either team was able to score. Drawing the first score was Matteo Alvarez on an unassisted effort and nicely executed finish to send the visiting team ahead for good. In the second period the pace continued but it was Big Green that would slowly seize the momentum. Andover suffered a couple of injuries and while this shift was happening Leo Ma and Tripp Woytowicz each added goals making the score 3-0 after two periods. Nick Gerard was in the goal for the Big Green and he was making the saves to keep momentum on his team’s side throughout the afternoon. Already in the second period Deerfield was rolling 4 lines and getting great effort from all four units. Our defense was solid and was the key difference in the early part of this contest.
The third period was all Deerfield scoring 4 more goals to leave the score at 7-0 for the day. Highlights on the day were several and here are just a few; penalty-killing effort from Felix Rockefeller and Alex Sotirhos, The play of the line of Welch, Alvarez, and Brozek (4 goals on the day), Leo Ma’s burst of speed on his second period goal, and the discipline from the entire team staying away from penalties and playing hard for the entire game.
The week ahead has us playing at Williston on Wednesday and then a return to home against rival Choate this Saturday.
