On Wednesday, Deerfield hosted Loomis for a rematch of last year’s class A championship match. With a solid crowd in attendance, Deerfield prevailed 3-0, with set scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 25-11.
Deerfield had some good defensive play from Zoe Gavros ‘23 and Elle Stearns ‘23 to open the match, but inconsistent Deerfield serving allowed the Pelicans to get the early lead. Both teams traded side-outs throughout the set, but the hitting of Cate Shanahan ‘23, Caroline Weller ‘23, Evie Mokarow ‘24, and Evelyn Kunde ‘26 was enough to allow Deerfield to take the first set.
The second set continued to see unforced errors from both teams, but Deerfield was able to capitalize more on their opportunities to allow setters Meghan Holland ‘23 and Wuyee Ke ‘26 to get middle hitters Georgia Sackrey ‘23 and Harmoni Dobbins ‘26 involved in the offense.
In the third set, Deerfield got out to a strong, early lead and the match was finished off with two kills from right-side hitter Natalie Meyer ‘23.
Thanks to Loomis for making the trip and for a good afternoon of volleyball.
We next travel to Miss Hall’s School for a Friday night match up; first serve is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
