On Wednesday, September 28th, the boys junior B footballers continued their road swing to start the season with a 3:45 kickoff up the hill against local rival the Eaglebrook School. Despite a lackluster 2nd half where they were shut out, the team managed to ride a strong 1st half to a 3-2 win and improve their record to 3-0 on the season. The team started out strong, right out of the gate, with a beautiful long-range goal by Sungmin Ahn ’26 in the 4th minute that just barely stayed underneath the bar and out of the reach of the Eaglebrook keeper for a 1-0 lead. A very similar goal by Read Kitchell ’26 in the 15th minute staked the visitors to a 2-goal lead and it looked like the team, after dominating possession, would be able to coast for the rest of the match. That impression was strengthened in the 30th minute when Matias Cushman ’25 netted yet another goal for what seemed like an insurmountable 3-0 lead heading into the half. After not threatening the Deerfield net for most of the 1st half, Eaglebrook shocked the visitors with a long-range goal just before half-time to trim the deficit to 2. The teams seemed to switch personalities for the 2nd half, with Eaglebrook controlling the run of the play and creating more opportunities. The pressure paid off in the 45th minute, when Eaglebrook scored on another long-range goal to cut the deficit to 1. That seemed to wake Deerfield up, to some degree, and they finally managed to create a few chances late. Both keepers came up big in the last couple of minutes of the match and Deerfield were fortunate to emerge with the 3-2 victory. Quad squad finally have their home opener on Saturday, October 1st with a 2:30 kickoff against Suffield Academy – the first of two meetings this season.
