On Saturday, September 24th, the boys junior B footballers hit the road for a 3:30 kickoff in Avon, CT against Avon Old Farms. In a back and forth affair, with neither team able to establish a significant advantage in shots or possession, Deerfield were able to break a scoreless tie late with a beautiful goal to win the match 1-0. With the win, the team moves to 2-0 on the season. Deerfield came close to taking an early lead, but a solid opportunity in the 15th minute hit the side netting instead. AOF appeared to take the lead in the 19th minute, but the goal was waved off for keeper interference. While he wasn’t tested very often, keeper Brendan Butz ’23 made a great diving save in the 22nd minute to keep the score tied and eventually earn his second clean sheet of the season. The teams went into half-time still tied at 0 with only a handful of chances in a tight defensive match. In the 56th minute, Deerfield finally took the lead on a direct free kick just outside the AOF 18 yard box. Michael Clifford-Levy ’26 sent a beautiful, curving drive towards the back post, where Matias Cushman ’25 was waiting to drive it home with a powerful header. Quad squad will be back in action on September 28th, with a 3:45 match on the road at the Eaglebrook School.
