Seven Deerfield harriers stepped up to race at the Canterbury Invitational under fair, friendly skies. The Doors took off at a contemplative pace, choosing the way of the tortoise in Aesop’s famous tale. As in the proverb, the early race leaders soon fell victim to their overambition while the boys in green and white overtook throughout the race. Canterbury’s course features a large hill in the third mile, but it proved no obstacle for Deerfield’s runners, whose steady effort pushed them all through the line with solid results across the board. The depth of the squad earned the team a 3rd place trophy behind the impressive squads from Hopkins and Loomis, which sets a new high water mark for the team at this meet in recent years. Next week, the team will take an off week in preparation for the October 9th contest against the Pelicans of St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire.
