The Deerfield boys JV tennis team (3-5) traveled to Exeter, NH on May 14th to visit Phillips Exeter Academy on an unseasonably hot day for a noon start. Deerfield struggled right out of the gate on the road, dropping all 3 doubles matches, even though several were competitive, to drop the first point of the match in an 8-game pro set format.
#1 doubles Ashish Sharma ‘24/Jack Willett ’23 – 4-8
#2 doubles Eddy Rena ‘24/Finn Knight ’25 – 5-8
#3 doubles Andy Chen ‘25/Preyas Sinha ’24 – 2-8
Needing to win at least 4 of the singles matches to win the overall match, Deerfield continued to struggle in the heat and lost the first 5 singles matches in a best 2-out-of-3 set format. Two of the matches went into a 3rd set tiebreaker, and Deerfield won one of those to make the final score 6-1.
#1 singles Sharma – 0-6, 0-6
#2 singles Willett – 3-6, 6-4, 11-9
#3 singles Matias Cushman ’24 – 4-6, 0-6
#4 singles Alex Ayres ’24 – 3-6, 0-6
#5 singles Nikhil Lebaka ’24 – 2-6, 6-8
