The Deerfield boys JV tennis team (2-4) hosted Choate Rosemary Hall on May 7th, after having the previous match against Westminster canceled due to rain. The weather remained unseasonably chilly and, without their top 3 players, Deerfield salvaged the last singles match of the afternoon, but were otherwise shut out, dropping the overall match 8-1. All of the matches were 8-game pro sets, with ads.
#1 doubles Theo Lewis ’24/Eddy Rena ’24 – 2-8
#2 doubles Gabe Zaccheo ’22/Preyas Sinha ’24 – 3-8
#3 doubles Finn Knight ’24/Andy Chen ’25 – 3-8
Exhibition doubles Alex Ayres ’24/Nikhil Lebaka ’24 – 6-8
Deerfield got off to a tough start, losing the 3 doubles matches, and found themselves in a 3-0 hole heading into the singles matches. Despite being shut out, many of the games were close and only lost after reaching deuce.
#1 singles Ashish Sharma ’24 – 5-8
#2 singles Ayres 2-8
#3 singles Lebaka 0-8
#4 singles Lewis 3-8
#5 singles Rena 8-6
#6 singles Knight 8-8 (4-7)
Although the overall match was done by that point, Rena played a strong match and Knight was within a few points of winning his match. The singles matches were closer than the doubles, but not enough to tip the balance of the match.
The boys JV tennis team will be back on the road for two matches this week, on 5/11 at Loomis and on 5/14 at Exeter.
