On Saturday, May 14, Deerfield traveled half an hour north to compete in Gill against host Northfield Mount Hermon and fellow visitor Phillips Exeter Academy. Conditions were sunny and very hot, perfect for sprinting and dismal for distance running. In this final tune-up for the league championship meet, Deerfield again emerged victorious, and for a third consecutive meet outscored the combined totals of both of their opponents – an especially promising result given that Phillips Exeter is expected to be the team’s primary competition for the league title on May 21.
Once again, it was a full team effort, as Deerfield scored points in every event and won the majority of events in both Track and Field. Track events were hand-timed, so while Elic Ayomanor, as well as the 4×100 team, appeared to set school records in several events, mandatory time adjustments mean that we’ll have to wait until Saturday’s championship to officially record those bests. It’s great to know that the athletes are healthy and ready to put up great times.
This has been a historic tri-meet season for Deerfield, and for the second time in ten years the team will have the chance to conclude an undefeated season with a league title on Saturday. That meet will take place at St. Paul’s, in Concord, New Hampshire, on Saturday, May 21. Field events will begin at 11:30 a.m. and Track events will begin at 1:30 p.m. Go Big Green!
