The Deerfield girls’ rowing team traveled to Woodstock, CT to compete against Pomfret School, Groton, Dexter-Southfield and Taft on Quasset Lake. Throughout the afternoon, there was a variable, at times strong, headwind. Fortunately the water remained rowable and the DA crews handled these slightly adverse conditions well. A big thanks to the host school, Pomfret, for organizing this regatta and to the other schools for providing excellent racing!
The girls’ first boat of coxswain Ashley LaBrucherie ‘23, co-captain Lila Nottage ‘22, Rachel Mark ‘23, Natalie Meyer ‘23, and Larrabee Pollack ‘23 needed a strong second half of their race to come back into fast starting crews from Groton and Taft. In the first 500m, DA had a narrow lead but maintained overlap with both Groton and Taft, who proved to be fairly even speed. Through the middle 500m, the girls from Deerfield showed their strength and began to pull away from their competitors. This continued into the closing portions of the race. DA crossed the finish line in 6:09.6, rowing to a 19 second victory over second place Taft, third place Groton, followed by Dexter-Southfield and Pomfret.
After a restart in the girls’ second boat race due to a collision between two other schools, the crew of coxswain Emi Takegami ‘25, Lillian Auth ‘24, Olivia Konar ‘22, Georgia Sackrey ‘23 and Margot McAuliffe ‘24 jumped out to an advantage in the first 250m ahead of both Groton and Taft. They were able to remain aggressive during the middle of the race, sustain a high cadence and continued to push their advantage. Despite the strongest wind of the afternoon during this race, the DA girls hit the finish line in 6:31.7, finishing 17 seconds ahead of Groton followed by Taft, Pomfret and Dexter-Southfield.
The girls’ third boat of Charlotte Steffensen ‘25, Carson Stultz ‘24, Tatum Lowe ‘25, Fiona Van Nice ‘25, and Jenny Jin ‘24 had a solid race against stiff competition on Quasset Lake. This group was able to establish an early lead in their race and continued to press their advantage through the middle of the race. In the second half of the race, they managed to extend their margin over an eager crew from Groton. They finished in a time of 6:26.0, having built a 9 second margin over second place Groton, followed by Taft in third and Dexter-Southfield in fourth.
The girls’ fourth boat of Neha Jampala ‘23, Alice Zhang ‘24, Alessia Root ‘23, Lily Pierce ‘25, and Mia Senturk ‘24 had an adjustment to their line-up from last weekend’s race. They used a powerful start to get to the front of the race early on and continued to build their lead through the middle of the race. Despite a few missed strokes in the middle of the race, a strong second half allowed them to extend their lead over a hard rowing crew from Groton and they ended up crossing the finish line in a time of 6:24.5. Groton crossed the line 12 seconds later followed by Taft.
In their season opening race, the girls’ fifth boat had a strong performance over competition from Taft and Pomfret. The crew of Chloe Xue ‘25, Emily Rice ‘24, Elizabeth Richards ‘24, Lukenine Suphakarn ‘24, and Sloan McClure ‘23, were able to establish themselves as the early leaders in the race. They were able to extend their lead through the middle of the race and rowed to a comfortable victory over their competition. DA clocked 7:12. at the finish, well ahead of second place Pomfret B and third place Pomfret A, with Taft rounding out the race.
