The Deerfield Track & Field team traveled to Phillips Andover Academy’s Sorota Outdoor Track on Saturday, April 16, to compete in a tri-meet against Andover and Taft. Conditions were chilly and windy, and the athletes happily remained warm in their new green and white track suits until it was time to step on the line. In their first scored and counted meet since the 2019 spring season, the Girls’ Track and Field team beat Taft but lost to Andover. The final score was Andover: 91, Deerfield Academy: 48, and Taft: 33.
Due to injuries, our throwing squad was a bit slim. However, the field team still managed to shine with some impressive events. Abby Fernald earned first place in the javelin an impressive 97’ 3” throw. Adeeva Alli competed in her first javelin competition with a PR of 74’. Deerfield swept the high jump competition by having the only two participants. Josephine Louis cleared 4’ 6” to earn first place followed by new comer Aye Woghiren clearing 3’ 6” for second place. Josephine also claimed 3rd place in pole vault when she cleared 8 feet, an especially impressive feat after just competing in the 4×400 prior to her final vault. Koko Akpan decided to try long jump for the first time this year and clear 14’ 4”in her first meet to claim 3rd place. Elsa Schuberth also cleared an impressive 13’ 8” in her first meet at Deerfield Academy. Koko also nabbed 3rd place in the triple jump.
The track events started shortly after the field events. Some highlights were Kaelin Creagh almost PRing in the 100 and grabbing first place with a time of 12.91 seconds. Kaelin also took first in the 200m race with Simi Lawal coming in a close second. Both of those athletes competed on the 4×100 along with Campbell Fealy and Jasmine Decossard to win the event with an impressive time of 51.56 seconds. Victoria Lee, Lexi Watson, and Julia Zhao all competed in their first meet as distance runners in the 800 meter race. Maddy Slater won door of the week for her efforts at the only runner in the 100 meter hurdles where she ran a fierce time of 18.38 seconds. Josephine Louis debuted in the 300m hurdles to nab second place with a time of 49.2 seconds. The 4×400 team composed of Aurelia Bolton, Bronte Levin, Kaelin Creagh, and Josephine Louis closed out the meet with some impressive efforts.
It was a great meet that had the team in positive spirits. It was exciting to see many participate in their first meet and Andover ran an efficient meet that ended in just over three hours. This meet put the team is a good spot to start with some very impressive notes and we look forward to hosting the Hunt Relays at Deerfield next weekend.
