On Wednesday the Deerfield Boys J.V. hockey team travelled north to the nearby Northfield Mount Hermon School. Looking to continue their winning ways Big Green had to fight through an uninspiring first period and improve their overall team play to earn a 5-1 win on the road. The day was a particularly warm day and just previous to boarding the bus the student body received word that Thursday would be a Head Of School Day. Needless to say, the boys were a bit distracted. Will Scharfenberger was ready at the start and he kept the team afloat while they were figuring out how to get themselves going. Will Lodge started the scoring with a nifty maneuver around the NMH goalie. NMH would come back and score recovering a puck in our defensive zone and taking advantage of our undisciplined zone coverage. The Gold Line of Alexander Rolfe, Nick Gold, Evan Galli, and Fred Chrysler played hard and were rewarded by scoring two goals on the afternoon. The first coming on a loose puck scramble in front with Alexander finding the back of the net. He would score again in the third period. Alex Sotirhos would score the third goal of the period for Deerfield giving the visitors a 3-1 advantage after one period of play.
Deerfield would score again in the second period. Defenseman Darien Chiang would skate the length of the ice and fire the puck past the NMH goalie. Alexander Rolfe would get the only third period goal with a good effort down around the NMH goal crease – his second of the game. Highlights today include Alexander Rolfe’s shot blocking skills, the gold line’s consistent play and Deerfield’s ability to play relatively penalty free today and in recent games.
Big Green closes out the season on Saturday with another road contest – this one against Westminster. The game is set for 1:00 p.m.
