The boys JV hockey team travelled up the hill for the second time this season to take on the young, but talented Eaglebrook varsity team. Back before the Holiday vacation these two teams played game 1 of the season’s series in a closely played overtime win for Big Green. Today’s outcome would be different with Eaglebrook skating to a 5-2 win. I give both teams a lot of credit in that this game was fast-paced and all business from the first puck drop. Deerfield would score the first goal of the game off a nice shot from Jack Gammage. Eaglebrook would come roaring back netting 2 goals giving them the lead after one period 2-1.
The second period was fast-paced with both teams creating great scoring opportunities and the goalies took center stage with good saves coming one after another. Will Scharfenberger did his best, as always, trying to keep his team within striking distance. About halfway through the first period the hosts would score the period’s lone goal as their lead widened to 3-1 after two periods.
In the third period Eaglebrook took care of business early scoring their 4th and 5th goals before Deerfield had the chance to mount their comeback. We had several good scoring opportunities but couldn’t find that lucky break all day and the Eaglebrook goalie was up for the challenge. Landon Whayne would score late in the game but by that time it was too late. Big Green played hard all game and remained focused and positive as they tried mounting the comeback. Lots of credit to both sides for a clean, fast-paced, and good hockey contest!
Next up for Deerfield are three road trips; Williston on Saturday, NMH next Wednesday and a season finale on the 26th at Westminster.
