On February 23rd, the boy’s thirds team traveled to Windsor, CT for a 2:45 tip against the Loomis Chaffee School. The team beat Loomis in a December scrimmage at Suffield Academy when Jonny Scagel ’25 hit 2 free throws with only a few seconds left for a 1-point win, while the first official meeting between the two teams was canceled last month. Unfortunately, the game didn’t go as well as the scrimmage, with Deerfield on the wrong end of a 57-33 decision. With the loss, the team’s record drops to 2-10 on the season, with one game remaining. Unlike recent games, Deerfield actually started strong and led 6-2 midway through the 1st quarter. At that point, the Loomis full-court press started to do its job and the turnovers mounted. Loomis ended the quarter on an 11-2 run to lead 13-8 going into the 2nd quarter. While Deerfield continued to shoot poorly, Loomis went on another big run to expand their lead to 36-18 at the half. The 3rd quarter was more of the same and while Deerfield played well in the 4th quarter and outscored Loomis 11-9, the lead was too big at that point. Brendan Butz ’23 had a breakout game, scoring 15 points and shooting 50% from the field, while MacGregor Hynds contributed numerous rebounds as well as 6 points. The team will play their final game of the season on February 26th, a 3 pm tip against the Westminster School at home.
