The Boys JV hockey team opened their 2022-2023 season on Wednesday making the trip up the hill to play our neighbor Eaglebrook School varsity. The opponent, always a skilled and well-coached unit, came out ready to play. These games are always close and today was no exception. The teams played hard and through two and one-half periods the score was still tied at 0-0. Nick Gerard was in the net for the Deerfield team and his play was solid all afternoon – earning him our game puck.
Alex Sotirhos finally broke the deadlock when he scored the game-winner with just under 5:00 minutes remaining in the game. He and line mates Julian Navab and Felix Rockefeller pressured the Eaglebrook defenders all afternoon and it was just a matter of time before they would score. Then in the remaining time, with under two minutes to go Rob Callender and Leo Ma each score empty-net goals to seal the 3-0 shutout win.
This was a good early season test for this group. After two periods of scoreless play, we asked the team to dig deep and remain disciplined in getting pucks driven to the net. The defensive core of Gisonni, Fleck, Belaire, Woytowicz, Callender and Lapham were solid in their play all game allowing for few good scoring opportunities for our opponents. Other key contributors on the day were Jack Gammage, Jack Welch, Billy Weller, Blake Donnellan, and Leo Ma.
The team gets ready for a busy weekend as we will face Selwyn House from Montreal on Friday and then travel to Choate for a Saturday 1:00 p.m. face-off.
